What Do We Wear?!!
Figuring out what to wear is probably the most stressful thing about a photo session. I am here to hopefully take away some of that stress by giving you some tips for your upcoming session.
COLOR
You will have two background choices for your session, black and tan.
Let's start with clothing color. It might sound backwards but for the black background you want dark toned clothing and for the lighter, tan color you will want to wear lighter toned clothing. Just trust me on this :) See image above.
For the darker option, blacks and dark shades of gray will be best. Bring on all the textures though! Different fabrics and textures are great! Texture is NOT the same as patterns though! Keep any patterns to a minimum. No pattern is best.
For the lighter option, tans, creams, whites will be perfect. Same with the fabrics and textures on this, they will add depth.
STYLE
The look I prefer for this type of session is classic and timeless. Think business attire. Slacks, (Jeans are fine but no rips is best. Black and gray for the dark background and tan and cream/white for the light background) button up shirts, sweaters, blouses... I have no doubt that you have something in your closet that will work.
It's best if everyone in the photo has a similar style of clothing. If two of you have business attire and one person looks like they just came from the gym, it will not work as well.
FIT
I recently had a 50th birthday and I wanted a dress for a photo shoot. I had been working hard on getting back in shape and wanted to show off my newly toned legs so I chose a dress with a slit. I still have a little ways to go in the mid-section so I found a dress that had some ruching around the middle to help to camouflage the area. Give a little thought to your assets and insecurities while choosing your wardrobe. You will be more comfortable during your session with flattering clothing.
Long or 3/4 sleeves are highly recommended for every body, no matter if you like your arms or not. We want the attention on our faces, not other areas of the body.
You're clothing should be comfortable to sit in and you need to be able to move your arms a little without the garment showing skin in places it shouldn't.
Well fitted clothing is important. That means not too tight and not too loose. Too tight and there might be bulges or visible under garments. Too loose and you will be hiding your curves and might make you look bigger than you are.
Don't stress too much about this though. I also provide you with flattering posing and lighting to accentuate and minimize so you will love the way you look.
UNDERGARMENTS
Yes, undergarments get their own paragraph. I shouldn't see them. That means bra/bralette straps too.
WRINKLES
Wrinkles (the clothing ones, not the skin ones:) get their own paragraph too. EVERYTHING NEEDS TO BE IRONED! Wrinkles (the clothing ones) and bra straps are not easy to get out in Photoshop so I will charge a fee if that needs to be done.
Need Help?
If you are unsure of your choices, I am here to help. Have each person put the clothes on and send me a mirror selfie. I will help you adjust if needed. Text it to (417)413-1429 or email at robin@soulfocusphotography.com
And my last little bit of advice? Try not to start WWIII with your family:) If your teenage daughter is adamant that she is wearing the jeans with holes, it is totally fine. This should be a bonding experience for all of you!
